The Bucknell Gamelan Ensemble will perform a free, public concert on Thursday, April 25, at 5 p.m. in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts Patio.
Under the direction of music professor Bethany Collier, the ensemble invites students of all majors and backgrounds to learn and perform traditional and new music of Indonesia. Members have the opportunity to develop playing technique on a variety of traditional instruments, including metallophones, pitched gongs, gong chimes, bamboo flutes, and drums. The ensemble plays a range of styles and repertoires, including pieces for Balinese angklung, Balinese gender wayang, Javanese soran-style pieces, adapted works, and new pieces for gamelan. The music is taught aurally (without the aid of written notation), and no previous experience with gamelan or formal musical training is required.
