The Bucknell Department of Economics presents George Lakey, a retired Swarthmore College professor who is author of the book How We Win: A Guide to Nonviolent Direct Action Campaigning (2018), who will present a free, public talk on direct action campaigning on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Elaine Langone Center Forum. He will also present a second public lecture on his earlier 2016 book, Viking Economics, on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. in Trout Auditorium.
Lakey has been active in direct action campaigns for six decades. Recently retired from Swarthmore where he was Eugene M. Lang Visiting Professor for Issues in Social Change and managed the Global Nonviolent Action Database research project, he has facilitated 1,500 workshops on five continents and led activist projects on local, national and international levels — most recently with Earth Quaker Action Team.
In his latest book, he draws on both theory and practice to provide guidance on connecting issue oriented campaigning into movement based politics. Viking Economics provides an historical account of how Scandinavian workers organized to support progressive social democratic policies and how these lessons might translate to the contemporary U.S.
