April 17: Susan Travis to Present the Virginia Travis Lecture in Social Justice

Susan Travis, whose leadership of multiple organizations since the 1970s has benefitted residents of the local region and beyond, will present the free, public Virginia Travis Lecture in Social Justice on Wednesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in the Elaine Langone Center’s Gallery Theatre. Her talk, titled “Promoting Social Justice through Human Service Agencies and Citizen Action, will be followed by a reception in the ELC Walls Lounge.

Dating to 1996, the Virginia Travis Lecture Award in Social Justice honors a member of the Bucknell or Lewisburg communities who has worked diligently and compassionately to promote social justice and progressive change at the local, state, national, or global levels.

Since the 1970s, Travis has worked as activities coordinator with the Union/Snyder Area Agency on Aging, and as executive director of the Union/Snyder Office of Human Resources and of Family Planning Services of Snyder/Union/Northumberland Counties. Her volunteer activities include service as the president and voters guide editor of the League of Women Voters of the Lewisburg Area, where she focuses on voter education and enfranchisement. She is past treasurer and board member of the Merrill Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy. Internationally she was a founder of Friends of Fulbright to India and has taught English in India and Russia, utilizing discussions of cultural similarities and differences to teach language and promote intercultural understanding.
