Sept. 22: Bucknell Observatory Holds Open House Friday

The telescopes of the Bucknell Observatory will be open to Bucknell families and the community on Friday, Sept. 22, from 8:30-11 p.m. during the University’s Family Weekend. Attendees will be able to view the sights of the night sky, including exploded stars, giant star clusters and distant galaxies.

Physics & Astronomy Professor Ned Ladd will give a short talk at 8:30 p.m. on the Bucknell Solar Eclipse expedition he led with a group of students and faculty who traveled to Crossville, Tenn. to observe and measure the total eclipse of the sun. He will describe the experiences of the participants and present some early scientific results.

The telescopes, including the 1887 Alvin Clark refractor and the modern telescopes of the Tressler Observing Lab, will be open for observing after the talk (weather permitting).

The Bucknell Observatory is located at the southern end of the Bucknell campus, just up the hill from Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The event is free and open to the public.
